Overview
The Doctoral Program in Law (PS DIH) was established in 1995 as part of the Parahyangan Catholic University Graduate School with the first chair of the postgraduate program (master of law and doctor of law) being Prof. Dr. Brigadier General (ret.) Soedjono Dirdjosisworo, SH, MBA. The initiative to establish a graduate school, and specifically a Doctoral Program (the Master’s Program was established five years later), was developed and realized during the period when the University was under the leadership of the Rector of Parahyangan Catholic University: A.P. Sugiarto, S.H. At the same time, the Graduate School also developed Doctoral Programs in other fields of study, such as Civil Engineering and Architecture, Social Sciences, Economics, and Management.
Among the first batch of alumni of the Doctoral Program in Law were several permanent lecturers from the Faculty of Law at Unpar, who later successfully obtained the highest academic title of professor, namely Prof. Johannes Gunawan and Prof. Bernadette Waluyo. Several professors at other universities, such as Prof. Johannes Ibrahim (Marwadewa University-Bali), Prof. Dwidja (Suryakancana University – Cianjur), the late Prof. Dudu Duswara (Judge at the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia), and Prof. Dr. H.M Syarifuddin, SH, MH (Chief Justice of the Supreme Court 2020-2025) are also alumni of the UNPAR Doctoral Program. Other names that can be mentioned—even as successors to the late Prof. B. Arief Sidharta from UNPAR—are Prof. Dr. Shidarta (BINUS-Jakarta) and Dr. Anthon F. Susanto (UNPAS-Bandung). Of course, not all can be mentioned because, as of 2023, the number of DIH Program alumni has reached more than 131 people. In 2016-17, the UNPAR Doctoral Program in Law Alumni Association was established with Prof. Dudu Duswara as its first chair. Currently, the chair of the UNPAR Doctoral Program in Law Alumni Association is held by Dr. Kikit Wirianti Sugata (2021-2026).
In 2018-19, the Graduate School was dissolved and the management of the Doctoral Program in Law was returned to the Faculty of Law. At the same time, the Faculty of Law initiated an evaluation and revision of the Doctoral Program curriculum that had been in effect since 2000. In 2019, the new curriculum for the Doctoral Program at the UNPAR Faculty of Law was approved by the Rector and began to be implemented. Starting from the 2018/2019 Academic Year, in line with the policy of restructuring and reorganizing the management of Parahyangan Catholic University, the Doctoral Program in Law was placed under the management of the Faculty of Law at Parahyangan Catholic University. Thus, the Dean of the Faculty of Law (formerly the Director of the Graduate School) became the main person in charge of managing the Doctoral and Master’s Programs.
